Racecourse Road Bus Shelters to be Adopted

For some time there had been an unresolved question over who is responsible for the bus shelters on Racecourse Road. They had fallen into disrepair, West Berkshire Council had not carried out repairs despite repeated requests, and the matter of who should look after them going forward had been left unanswered. For residents who rely on the bus into Newbury and beyond, that uncertainty needed resolving.

I proposed that Greenham Parish Council step in and adopt the shelters, so they can be repaired, kept clean and properly maintained. Councillors agreed, on the basis that we first press West Berkshire to honour the repairs it had originally committed to and, failing that, accept the Racecourse's offer to fund the work — alongside applying for a grant to set aside for future upkeep. After valuations and some final checks, the two shelters on the adopted part of Racecourse Road are now in the process of being taken on by the Parish Council, and I am continuing to look at how best to resolve the remaining stops on the unadopted sections so that the whole estate is eventually covered.
